The Space Coast of East Central Florida has come into its
own in recent years. Over the years since those first rockets began to spew
forth from Cape Canaveral, two factors
inextricably intertwined to create an incredibly vibrant and balanced economy -
the Space Program brought jobs and international attention. The jobs were well-paying tech jobs requiring engineers and other professionals and the worldwide
notoriety greatly expanded an already existing tourist industry. And the
tourists liked what they found-- great year-round weather, beaches, and a slow,
laid back quality of life. Over the years, this mix of the space program and the
tourist industry morphed into a wonderfully diversified socio-economic engine
envied by many. As an unintended consequence, the spin-off from the space
program created a cadre of technical entrepreneurs - garage and backyard
startup companies that went on to be successful businesses which further
contributed to the job base. And the folks who visited as tourists and liked
what they saw grew older, retired, and remembered. As a result, many came back
to be with us.
